Nova's sophomore record dropped exclusively on PAYLOAD+ this week, and it's already reshaping what a Planet Hopper original release can sound like. Where the debut leaned on live instrumentation and long-form builds, Nova Effect is eleven tracks of tightly-wound synth work, cut fast and mixed faster — the kind of record that sounds like it was made in a single, sleepless week. As it turns out, most of it was.

We sat down with the producer behind the boards to talk through the sessions, the gear that didn't make the credits, and the deadline that nearly sank the whole thing before the title track saved it.

Built Backwards

Most records start with a single, and the rest of the album gets built around it. Nova Effect did the opposite: the title track was the last thing written, added eight days before the PAYLOAD+ delivery deadline, after an early version of the album tested flat with the label's internal listening group.

"We had ten tracks that were fine," the producer told us. "Fine doesn't get you a cover story. So we scrapped the sequencing, kept maybe four ideas from the graveyard pile, and started over with just a drum machine and a bad mood."

"The whole album changed the second we stopped trying to make something people would like and started making something we couldn't stop listening to ourselves." Nova, on the title track

The 3AM Session

The title track itself came together in a single overnight session — the kind every producer has a version of, but few actually end up shipping. A scrapped bassline from another song, pitched down and slowed to half speed, became the low end. A vocal take recorded as a placeholder, never meant to make the final mix, stayed in because nobody could recreate the exact fatigue in it on a fresh morning take.

It's the kind of detail that doesn't usually survive contact with a release deadline. This time, it's the whole reason the album exists in its current form.
